Commentary On “Protecting Kaplan, Washington Post’s Donald Graham Lobbied Against New Regulations”
Actually, I think the problem solving skills is worse then Kaplan marketing their programs to low-income students who make up the bulk of their enrollment. It is the societal mess that Kaplan has created by releasing these students with a degree who are unprepared in their careers which is equally as difficult to organizations that hire them. Why? Because hiring people who can not compete in their jobs today on a world wide basis is not helping this country grow as we still have a skill gap. Just because someone has a degree does not mean they learned anything especially when the potential of the bar of excellence being lowered and grade inflation occurs to accommodate those students to pass their courses. As old fashion as it may sound, basic skills such as reading, writing, and math are needed as well as critical thinking skills, reasoning skills, problem solving and other subject matters including science, technologies and engineering. The 21st century demands we do better with our learning so that we can compete on a world wide basis.
The real question is transferring the cost of these folks to the employer who has to retrain these people. Additionally, what these graduates do not understand, those school loans that they signed up for are not free. They have to pay the money back. So what societal issues have been created? Perhaps it is a math lesson? Perhaps it will give them incentive to study and improve their skills so they can compete with others on a world wide basis?
